Grass Roof

Since opening its doors in 2013, The Grass Roof Coffee Shop and Farm Stall (on Olive Tree Farm) has become something of a Port Elizabeth landmark, what with its unique feature: a pitched roof covered in grass and wild flowers! You may actually think that your eyes are deceiving you when you drive down the Seaview Road, but that is not the case.

This wonderful eatery, on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth promotes a healthy, organic lifestyle and the roof, designed by young and hip architect Dal Venables, is a symbol of this.

Located just a few kilometres from Sardinia Bay on the corner of Heron Road and the New Seaview Road, Grass Roof offers a varied menu that promises hearty and delicious country meals, from breakfast comforts to lunchtime favourites.

Along with a smorgasbord of handcrafted pastries and cakes, including artisanal bread, baked fresh every day, Grass Roof also offers pizzas fired in their custom-built pizza oven.

The owners, Nicky and Mike Charlewood, have created a cheerful café and farm stall experience that captures the laid-back beach atmosphere that Port Elizabeth is justifiably famous for.  On the weekends, children play outside on the lawn while parents catch up over coffees in the courtyard.  On windy afternoons, customers retreat indoors to savour the warmth from Grass Roof’s indoor fireplace.  The courtyard and verandahs offer extra seating for those busy days.

The rustic farm stall stocks wholesome farm produce – everything from craft olive oils and cheeses to fresh fruits and vegetables and free range eggs.  Look for vibrantly coloured peppers grown across the street and delicious ciabatta bread baked on site.
